The Phillies optioned Johnson to Triple-A Lehigh Valley following Wednesday's doubleheader against the Padres.
Analysis
Johnson pitched two shutout innings and struck out two batters in the Phillies' 6-4 loss to the Padres on Wednesday in the first game of the day, lowering his ERA to 2.25 through four big-league frames. He'll head back to the minors now that his duties as the 27th man for the twin bill are complete, but he remains an option to return to Philadelphia down the line as a multi-inning reliever.

Stat Review
How does Seth Johnson compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2021
He returned last season from Tommy John surgery and threw just 10.1 innings. He converted from shortstop to starting pitcher in college before the Rays selected him 40th overall in 2019. The Orioles were willing to stash him on the 40-man roster while he recovered from Tommy John surgery. He has a plus fastball, plus slider, but this will be a big year for him to show he has the command, health and third pitch to remain a starting pitcher.
Johnson is following a similar path to Dodgers top pitching prospect Josiah Gray. Both were amateur shortstops who moved to the mound in effort to advance their baseball careers. Johnson, whom the Rays selected with the No. 40 overall pick in 2019, had a low-to-mid-90s fastball with late life when he was drafted, and he was touching 99 mph during the fall instructional league. Like Gray, he seems to be making exponential improvements as he gets further removed from being a position player. Johnson's slider is a second plus pitch and he has shown more feel for a changeup than the typical conversion project. The 6-foot-1 righty has an athletic delivery and projects for at least average command and control. He should spend his age-22 season at High-A with a chance to see Double-A if he impresses.
