Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
After spending two injury-marred seasons in a setup role, Suarez remained healthy and emerged as the Padres closer. The 33-year-old was outstanding, racking up nine wins (T-2nd among relievers), 36 saves (4th in the league) and an 81.8 percent team save share that was 6th-highest among closers. He was named NL Reliever of the Month for May and earned his first All-Star selection. Suarez wasn't sharp in the second half, but still finished with a respectable 2.77 ERA and 1.05 WHIP for the season. Perhaps most impressively, he signficantly improved his walk rate, cutting it by three percentage points. This may be attributed to a pitch mix change, as Suarez went fastball-heavy (71 percent usage) while completely abandoning his slider. The right-hander displayed improved velocity on his four-seamer, averaging 99.1 miles per hour on the pitch compared to 97.7 in 2023. As long as health persists for Suarez, he's the favorite to retain closing duties for San Diego in 2025. Read Past Outlooks

Notches 24th save
Suarez recorded his 24th save of the season in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Phillies, allowing one run on three hits and striking out one in the ninth inning.
Analysis
The Padres took a three-run lead into the ninth, giving Suarez the cushion to survive a few singles. The 34-year-old closer has hit a rough patch since mid-June, getting tagged for runs in five of his last eight appearances while stumbling to a 16.89 ERA, 3.56 WHIP and 5:4 K:BB over his last 5.1 innings, but he's blown only one of four save chances during that swoon. Jeremiah Estrada, Yuki Matsui and Adrian Morejon have all picked up saves as well since June 19, and Jason Adam would also likely be a factor in the ninth if manager Mike Shildt elects to shift Suarez into a lower-leverage role until he rights the ship.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
After an impressive debut in the States in 2022, Suarez declined his $5 million player option last November and became a free agent. A few days later, the right-hander signed a five-year contract with the Padres, as the team clearly thought highly of him to pay him $10 million per season. Unfortunately, Suarez missed the entire first half of 2023 while recovering from severe elbow inflammation. The soon-to-be 33-year-old made his season debut right after the All-Star break and slid right back into setup duties. Suarez would only pitch 27.2 innings across 26 appearances, however, as he also missed 10 games for the alleged use of a foreign substance. Suarez wound up compiling four wins, nine holds and a 0.90 WHIP for San Diego last year and figures to have a leg up for closing duties in 2024.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Candidate to leave San Diego?
The Padres could trade Suarez before the deadline in an attempt to improve their offense for the second half of the regular season, Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic speculate.
Analysis
The Padres need to bolster their offense and the rotation, and Suarez might be one of the best trade assets on the roster. However, any contract discussions are complicated by the specifics of Suarez's current deal. His deal includes $8 million options for 2026 and 2027 that he must exercise or decline simultaneously after the World Series. Plus, Suarez owns a 6.23 ERA in 17.1 innings and 19 outings since the beginning of March.
