2025 Fantasy Outlook
Vasquez came to the Padres from the Yankees as part of the Juan Soto trade last offseason, and he ended up bouncing between the minors and majors in his first year with San Diego, logging 98.0 big-league innings and 41.2 Triple-A frames. The right-hander did an adequate job at limiting walks (6.7 BB%) and tossed six quality starts among his 20 outings, but his overall numbers (4.87 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, 62:29 K:BB) were below average. Vasquez's fastball sits at 94-95 mph -- good enough for success in the majors -- but he posted a meager 18.9% whiff rate during his time with the Padres and an even more paltry 14.4% strikeout rate (the latter number ranked in the first percentile leaguewide). Joe Musgrove is recovering from Tommy John surgery and may not pitch at all next season, which gives Vasquez a clearer path to a rotation spot, but his profile isn't one of a desirable fantasy starter. Sharp in no-decision Tuesday
Vasquez didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 2-1 extra-inning loss to the Cubs, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks over five-plus innings. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander blanked the Cubbies for five frames before running out of gas in the sixth, as he gave up back-to-back singles to Dansby Swanson and Nico Hoerner before getting the hook, with Adrian Morejon then letting one of the inherited runners cross the plate. Vasquez left the mound after 80 pitches (51 strikes), and while his 8:14 K:BB through 20.2 innings is worrisome, he'll carry a 1.74 ERA and 1.35 WHIP into his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week in Detroit.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
A major beneficiary of an offseason trade that sent Juan Soto and Trent Grisham to New York, Vasquez goes from being a long reliever with the Yankees to a strong rotation candidate with the Padres. This is partially due to the Padres' shallow starting pitching depth chart, but there's reason beyond that to give Vasquez an opportunity as a big-league starter. He sits at 94-95 mph with his fastball and threw his cutter, slider, changeup and curveball over 10 percent of the time in the majors last season, so it's a full starter's pitch mix. Vasquez is a 6-foot righty, so he doesn't get much extension on his pitches, but he has comfortably logged over 100 innings in three straight seasons. His curveball is his top offspeed pitch, but his 17.9 Whiff% was well below average, so it's hard to argue Vasquez has a high ceiling. Still, there's a chance he emerges as a solid home streamer in 15-team and deeper formats as long as he wins a rotation spot this spring.
