The White Sox optioned White to Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
A late entry into the competition for a spot on the White Sox's Opening Day pitching staff after he was claimed off waivers from the Yankees on Feb. 17, White made just one appearance in Cactus League play before getting sent back to minor-league camp. Though White has made all five of his career appearances in the majors as a reliever, he worked as a swingman at Triple-A Round Rock in the Rangers organization in 2024 and could get a look in the Charlotte rotation to begin the upcoming season.

Due to injuries and the pandemic, White's had a slow path through the Rangers' system, but he appeared to be working toward a potential rotation spot in 2024 after a successful 2022 season. That trajectory continued over the first half of 2023 at Double-A Frisco - which included a stint in the All-Star Futures Game. Following a brief stay in the majors when Texas was in a mid-summer bullpen bind, White was returned to the minors and elevated to Triple-A Round Rock. That's where the wheels started to wobble. The strike-throwing right-hander experienced an increased walk rate and drop in strikeouts while pitching to a 4.99 ERA in 52.1 innings for the Express. A sparkling K:BB ratio of 4.52:1 in 2022 dropped to 1.45:1 in 2023 (1:1 in Triple-A). Adjusting to the sport's most advanced minor-league level is nothing new, so it shouldn't diminish White's prospect status until he has a second go with Round Rock.
