Basabe's 2024 season was truncated by a wrist fracture that limited him to 78 games between his rehab assignment in the Complex League and Triple-A Durham. Basabe has now amassed nearly 2,000 plate appearances in the minor leagues, and does have a .301 average along with a .359 OBP, as he has shown strong bat to ball skills throughout the minor leagues. The challenge has been that skill has not translated to the big leagues, as he looked rather overmatched when we last saw him in 2023, and the club never promoted him last season despite his return from injury in mid-July. Basabe was traded to the Giants in February after being designated for assignment, which gives him a more difficult path to immediate playing time in the majors. Cut from big-league camp
The Giants optioned Basabe (shoulder) to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday.
ANALYSIS
After reaching the majors with the Rays in 2023 and appearing in 31 games, Basabe spent the entire 2024 campaign in the minors and struggled during his time in the International League, slashing .248/.293/.336 over 283 plate appearances. The Giants acquired him in February and handed him a spot on the 40-man roster, but Basabe was unlikely to break camp even a strained right shoulder hadn't kept him from playing in the Cactus League since Feb. 25. If he's healthy to begin the minor-league season, Basabe should be in line to handle a near-everyday role with Triple-A Sacramento.

Basabe amassed nearly 1,700 plate appearances in the minor leagues before his 23rd birthday while also earning his first promotion to the majors. Basabe hit .311/.369/.432 in the Tampa Bay farm system, and injuries, as well as a .296/.351/.426 line in Durham this year, earned him that promotion. Like Jonathan Aranda, that minor league success did not translate into major league success, as Basabe looked completely overmatched at the plate against major league pitching aside a grand slam off Daniel Bard in a blowout game in late August. The switch hitter is still growing into his frame and profiles as a bottom of the order utility player until such time as his skills or opportunities improve. The Rays dealt away one of the roadblocks in his way in Vidal Brujan, so it would appear Basabe would at least inherit the role Brujan had with the club in 2023. He can safely be avoided in mixed leagues for the time being given his rather limited ceiling.
