Stat Review
How does Nick Nelson compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2021
2020
Nelson made 47 appearances for the Phillies in 2022, mostly as a low-leverage reliever, but he threw just a single big-league outing in 2023. He suffered a hamstring strain in mid-March, was optioned once he got healthy in early May, and promptly injured the same hamstring again 10 days later. While he was activated again in early June, he spent almost the entirety of the rest of the year with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, only getting called up to make a single bulk-relief appearance at the start of October. Nelson's performances in 20 starts for Lehigh Valley hardly indicate that he should have been called up sooner. Both his 17.7% strikeout rate and 9.9% walk rate were poor, leading to a FIP (5.31) which was far worse than his already unimpressive 4.35 ERA. With better health in 2024, Nelson could spend more time in the majors, but the Phillies are unlikely to use him in anything other than long relief.
This player will receive an outlook for the 2021 fantasy baseball season.
Fantasy teams aren't the only ones fancying strikeouts; major-league organizations chase them as well. Nelson's ability to miss bats and generate groundballs earned him a spot on the Yankees' 40-man roster. The Bronx Bombers will still probably give the 24-year old fireballer a chance to start, but the move to shield Nelson from the Rule 5 draft suggests he could be on the fast track as a reliever. Nelson rushes his heater to the plate in the mid-90s, touching 98. He also throws a power curve, splitter and cutter, but he lacks control of his secondary offerings, resulting in a high walk rate mitigating a double-digit strikeout rate at every level the past two seasons. Nelson should return to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre where he finished last season. If he can limit the free passes, Nelson could make his debut out of the bullpen later in the season.
