2025 Fantasy Outlook
Jim Thome isn't a common comp for high-end draft prospects, but that's the type of player scouts envision Kurtz becoming if he reaches his ceiling. The fourth-overall pick in 2024, Kurtz slashed .353/.450/.608 with two home runs and a 16:9 K:BB in 60 plate appearances in the Arizona Fall League after ending the regular season on the injured list at Double-A Midland due to a hamstring strain. Other than a general lack of athleticism and a bad body (listed at 6-foot-5, 240 pounds), Kurtz's only notable flaw is his injury history -- he missed time with random injuries while putting up cartoonish offensive numbers at Wake Forest (career 1.283 OPS, 46 home runs in 110 games his final two seasons). However, after slashing .368/.520/.763 with four homers in 12 games split between Single-A and Double-A before dominating in the AFL, Kurtz's track record of hitting pro pitching is arguably tops in the 2024 draft class. He could reach the majors this summer if he stays healthy and performs as expected. Read Past Outlooks

Caps off season with 36th homer
Kurtz went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 9-2 loss against the Royals.
Analysis
The rookie slugger provided Oakland's only offense of the night with a 423-foot blast off Sam Long in the eighth inning, marking his 36th homer of the season and his seventh since September 10. Over that span, he hit .233 with 13 RBI while continuing to show his game-changing power. Kurtz looks like the clear favorite for AL Rookie of the Year honors, as he'll finish the regular season with an impressive .290/.383/.619 slash line, 26 doubles, 86 RBI and 90 runs scored to go along with his outstanding long-ball total across 488 plate appearances.

Athletics want to talk extension
Athletics general manager David Forst said Tuesday that he's had "a lot of conversations" with ownership about contract extensions for young players like Kurtz, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Forst added that he expects those talks to continue over the offseason. It's no surprise that the A's would be keen on locking up Kurtz to a long-term contract, although it's unclear what the 22-year-old's appetite for an extension would be. Kurtz slashed .290/.383/.619 with 36 home runs during his rookie season and is under team control through 2031.
