Matthew Batten

29-Year-Old Third Baseman3B
San Diego Padres AAA
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Batten received some run at third base down the stretch with Manny Machado playing through an elbow injury and had a .713 OPS in 43 games for the campaign. However, Batten struggled to a .218/.320/.264 slash line in 101 plate appearances during the final month of the season. The All-Star third baseman underwent offseason surgery to address the injury and could be limited to serving as the designated hitter early in 2024, which would open playing time at the hot corner. Batten would be in the mix to get at least some of those reps, and he has some power and speed potential with 12 homers and 27 steals in 86 games at Triple-A last year. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
The Padres removed the 29-year-old from the 40-man roster Friday, and he'll remain in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. Batten has appeared in just one big-league game this season and has a .247/.325/.348 slash line in 454 plate appearances with El Paso.

Stat Review
How does Matthew Batten compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Collette Calls: Bold Hitter Predictions Accountability
41 days ago
Jason Collette reviews the hits and misses from his hitting half of his preseason bold predictions, including big hits on Brenton Doyle and Mark Vientos.
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Batten struggled in his first taste of the majors last season, going 2-for-19 with six strikeouts. That he reached the big leagues at all is an impressive accomplishment given that he was a 32nd-round draft pick in 2017. Batten's path to the Padres has been paved by positional versatility (aside from catcher, he's played every position -- including pitcher -- in the minors) and steady improvement at the plate. Last season, he posted a career-best .840 OPS with Triple-A El Paso and demonstrated a hint of power for the first time as a pro, slugging 12 homers in 378 plate appearances. There's no expectation that he'll hit for much power in the majors, but he can be a useful depth piece if he's able to hit to the gaps and maintain the double-digit walk rate he has consistently posted in the minors. Batten has also blossomed on the basepaths at Triple-A over the past two seasons, swiping 45 bags in 52 attempts. There's little chance that he'll be able to break into San Diego's loaded lineup and find everyday at-bats, but he could fill a valuable role as a super-utility player and pinch runner.

3BSan Diego Padres  AAA
May 25, 2023
Batten could be called up by the Padres this weekend if Manny Machado is unable to return from his hand injury, according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Manager Bob Melvin indicated San Diego is likely to promote another infielder should Machado not be ready to come off the injured list, and Batten would be the only option already on the 40-man roster. Batten has an underwhelming .204/.366/.364 slash line at Triple-A El Paso this season, but the Friars' injury issues -- Ha-Seong Kim also exited Thursday's game with a knee injury -- could result in a major-league opportunity.
