2025 Fantasy Outlook
Miller made six starts in 2023, but durability issues raised questions about his role entering the 2024 campaign. However, an outstanding spring of one-inning appearances carved a logical path for the 25-year-old to become the Athletics closer. The right-hander tallied the A's first save of the season and never looked back, averaging 100.9 mph on his 4-seamer while blowing away opposing hitters at a league-leading 41.8 percent clip. Miller also led qualified relievers with a remarkable 33.3 K-BB percentage. Perhaps most importantly, the hurler remained healthy for the most part, only missing a few weeks on the IL with a fractured pinkie on his non-throwing hand. The injury risk remains, but Athletics general manager David Forst recently indicated that the team is not considering moving Miller back into a starting role. His upside warrants a pick as a top-7 closer for 2025 drafts. Read Past Outlooks

Shows off blistering fastball
Miller threw 11 fastballs over 100 mph Tuesday against the Rangers in his second appearance of the spring, MLB's David Adler reports.
ANALYSIS
Miller's first fastball of the outing -- clocked at 98.8 mph -- was hit for a home run off the bat of Josh Smith. After that, Miller ramped up the velocity, consistently hitting triple digits and topping out at 102.9 mph. Miller solidified himself in the ninth-inning role for the A's with a breakout in 2024 when he racked up 28 saves and 104 strikeouts in 55 appearances, and he is being drafted as a top-five closer in many leagues this spring.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
The three most fantasy-relevant aspects of Miller's profile are his off-the-charts injury risk, his truly elite stuff and his team context: great home park, horrific run support. Of pitchers who will enter spring training healthy, it would be hard to find anyone more likely to get injured during spring training than Miller. A shoulder injury limited him to 30.2 innings (including the Arizona Fall League) as a 23-year-old in 2022 - his first full pro season. A UCL sprain limited him to 52.2 innings in 2023, and he has only topped 60 innings twice dating back to college, logging 67.2 innings in 2019 and 98.2 innings in 2021, in part because of a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis. The fact he can touch 102 mph with his fastball only adds to the injury risk. He threw five-plus innings in three of his 17 appearances last year, and he didn't throw more than three innings in any of his 11 post-injury appearances. As scary as his durability track record is, his stuff is equally scary for opposing batters. In addition to his 80-grade fastball, he throws a mid-90s cutter, an upper-80s slider and a low-90s changeup. There are reports that the 25-year-old flamethrower could be used as a high-leverage reliever this year due to his durability issues, but this team is arguably the worst in baseball for pitcher wins and saves.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

No movement on extension
During an appearance on Foul Territory on Friday, Miller said the A's have not reached out regarding a contract extension.
ANALYSIS
The Athletics have uncharacteristically spent some significant money this offseason, including extensions for Brent Rooker and Lawrence Butler, but it doesn't appear that Miller will be joining that group anytime soon. The right-hander will have his first year of arbitration eligibility in 2026, so he's still multiple years away from potentially hitting free agency.
