2024 Fantasy Outlook
Machado collected 30 homers and 91 RBI to go along with a .781 OPS -- his lowest since 2017 -- in 138 games last season. He played through an elbow injury for much of the campaign and made 33 appearances as a designated hitter before undergoing surgery to repair a tendon immediately after the regular season. The procedure carries a 4-to-6 month recovery timeline, which clouds his availability for the start of the 2024 campaign. He provided strong defense in his 105 games at the hot corner and still delivered plenty of power despite the injury with a second straight 30-homer season. Machado isn't likely to be at full strength for the start of spring training, but it's possible he's ready to go by Opening Day. He could also be limited to serving as the designated hitter early on to help ease him back into things at third base, but his true availability won't be known until he gets further into his recovery and rehab work. Even if he does end up missing some time in April, Machado is likely to be a strong fantasy producer in 2024. Read Past Outlooks
Absent from lineup
Machado is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Machado will sit for the regular-season finale after going 1-for-10 with one RBI across the first two games of the series against Arizona. Unless he comes in to pinch hit, Machado will end the regular season having slashed .275/.325/.472 with 11 stolen bases, 29 home runs and 105 RBI across 643 plate appearances. Tyler Wade will start at third base Sunday and bat eighth.

Machado delivered a career-best 152 wRC+ with 37 doubles, 32 home runs, 102 RBI and 100 runs to power the Padres offense in 2022. It's the second straight season the third baseman has cracked 100 RBI, and it's the sixth time in his career he's topped 30 homers. He surprisingly produced his worst strikeout rate at 20.7 percent, but a .337 BABIP helped him to a .298 average despite a .264 xBA. Machado will turn 31 years old in July and should continue to be a major producer near the top of San Diego's lineup in 2023, though his numbers could fall a bit if he's unable to again significantly outperform his expected figures.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Extension still possible?
Machado told reporters on Friday that he is still open to working out an extension with the Padres, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Machado had previously stated that he and his agent had set a Feb. 16 deadline in order to sign an extension, but the infielder sounded more open to a possible long-term deal Friday. "You know, nothing's out of question, Machado said. "Obviously, they know how much San Diego means to me and what I want to be here. At the end of the day, they knew exactly where I was when that deadline was set. And we'll see what happens. Our main focus right now is playing baseball. We'll see." If Machado does hit free agency after the 2023 season, he'll assuredly be one of the most sought-after bats in the class.
