2024 Fantasy Outlook
Gil underwent Tommy John surgery in May of 2022 and made it back for two appearances at Triple-A in September of 2023. His mid-to-upper-90s fastball velocity was back, averaging 96 mph while touching 99 mph. His devastating high-spin slider was also at its pre-surgery 85-86 mph velocity. This is his last season with a minor-league option, so the 25-year-old righty may move back and forth between Triple-A and the majors, particularly if the Yankees want to keep developing him as a starter. While Gil's repertoire is pretty shallow -- he'll flash a decent changeup but it is rarely used -- the biggest swing skill for him will be his command, as his fastball and slider are good enough pitches to turn a lineup over twice if he's locating them. He's had a walk rate north of 14 percent during four of his six assignments since 2021, and the hope is that his control will be passable as he gets further removed from surgery. If he does get moved to the bullpen, Gil has the stuff to pitch in high-leverage situations. Read Past Outlooks
Allows four runs in no-decision
Gil received a no-decision Tuesday, yielding four runs on five hits over four-plus innings as the Yankees took Game 4 of the World Series over the Dodgers. He walked two and struck out one batter.
ANALYSIS
Gil served up a two-run homer to Freddie Freeman in the first inning before settling in to face one over the minimum from the second to fourth frames. The right-hander remained in to start the top of the fifth but was pulled after allowing a leadoff homer to Will Smith and a walk to Tommy Edman. The Yankees' bullpen locked things down after that with five scoreless frames. Gil has lasted four innings in both of his postseason outings, yielding a total of six runs. He does not project to start another game during the World Series but could be available in relief, if needed, should the Yankees extend the series back to Los Angeles.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2020
Gil's elbow gave out during a start last May at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and he wound up needing Tommy John surgery. His recovery has gone as anticipated but we're unlikely to see him as an option for the Yankees until at least the second half. Gil was arguably the most electric young arm the Yanks had prior to surgery, but he's had trouble taking the ball every fifth day and also throwing strikes. He probably won't have any fantasy value in 2023, but there's still plenty of time for him to turn into something.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Fatigue angle downplayed
Yankees manager Aaron Boone and Gil both downplayed the idea that the right-hander is suffering from fatigue and instead cited some mechanics issues following Tuesday's game against the Reds, reports Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News.
ANALYSIS
Gil is scheduled to start against the Red Sox on Sunday Night Baseball, but his last three starts, all losses, have been ugly with 16 runs allowed and a 6:9 K:BB in 9.2 frames. He's also plunked five batters during that stretch. The 26-year-old was one of the best pitchers in baseball through his first 14 starts of the year with a 2.02 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 10.8 K/9 over 80 innings, but that form has disappeared across the past few weeks. Coming off a lost season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, Gil is already nearing the career high of 108.2 innings he pitched between the majors and minors in 2021, and his workload during the second half could be serious concern.
