Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Hendriks' return to the majors appeared imminent last season when he embarked on a minor league rehab assignment last August - 12 months after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2023. The veteran tossed five scoreless innings across six appearances between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, but endured multiple setbacks to prolong his Red Sox debut and shift his focus to 2025. Hendriks' four-seam fastball velocity should be monitored closely this spring, as his K-rate surged when he was throwing the pitch in the upper-90's between the 2019 and 2022 seasons. If he's sitting in the mid-to-low 90's during Grapefruit League play, a sub-30 percent strikeout rate should be expected. This would align with his K-rates from 2015 to 2018, where he averaged between 94.7 and 95.3 mph on his fastball. With 116 career saves, Hendriks should compete for closing duties in Boston, but the role is not guaranteed. First, he has to prove he can still pitch at a high level. Read Past Outlooks

Hendriks missed the early stages of the 2023 season while recovering from treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Impressively, he returned to the White Sox bullpen in late May, though he was limited to just five appearances before undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery. With the 34-year-old expected to miss the majority, if not all, of the 2024 season, Chicago declined its $15 million team option, thus making him a free-agent. Despite him being unavailable for the upcoming campaign, Hendriks still landed a multi-year deal with the Red Sox on the strength of his track record as a veteran closer with tremendous clubhouse impact.
