2026 Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Griffin came into 2025 with high expectations as one of the toolsiest prospects in the lower levels, but he exceeded the hype, even as the consensus top prep position player from the 2024 First-Year Player Draft. Known for his plus-plus speed, premium athleticism and physical 6-foot-4, 225-pound frame, Griffin looks the part of a future superstar in fantasy and real life. He slashed .333/.415/.527 with 21 home runs, 65 steals and a 21.7 percent strikeout rate as a 19-year-old playing 50 games at Single-A, 51 games at High-A and 21 games at Double-A. His wRC+ actually climbed with each promotion, culminating with him being 75 percent better than the average Double-A hitter despite being the second-youngest hitter with 80 plate appearances at the level, behind only Leo De Vries. There were questions about Griffin's hit tool as an amateur, but now the only real question is when he'll make his big-league debut in 2026. Despite the fact he hasn't played at Triple-A, Griffin is already one of Pittsburgh's best position players, and the two sides may work on a contract extension this winter/spring that would accelerate his timetable. He can play anywhere on the diamond but has seen the most work at shortstop. Read Past Outlooks
Could compete for shortstop job
The Pirates are "strongly considering" giving Griffin the opportunity to win their starting shortstop job, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis
The No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, Griffin slashed .333/.415/.527 with 21 home runs and 65 stolen bases across three levels in 2025 in his first professional season, finishing the year at Double-A Altoona. Griffin will not turn 20 until late April, and the last teenage position player to debut in the big leagues was Juan Soto in 2018. The Pirates have a clear opening at shortstop, though, and the organization is sending signals that it wants to surround ace Paul Skenes with more talent. Griffin's stock in redraft leagues will soar if it looks like the Pirates will indeed give him a real chance to crack the Opening Day roster.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Griffin, the consensus top prep position player from the 2024 draft, has four loud tools, while his hit tool is more of a question mark. A 6-foot-4, 215-pound righty hitter who plays a good shortstop and an even better center field, Griffin has 70-grade speed, a 70-grade arm and plus power that could tick up even more at his physical peak. He turns 19 in April, so he's on the younger side for his class, and most sluggers who are as tall and as young as Griffin come with some hit tool risk. Projecting prep hit tools is one of the toughest tasks for amateur scouts, so there's not going to be much clarity on whether that's a clear weakness or a non-issue until the Mississippi high schooler gets to full-season ball. He didn't play after getting selected ninth overall by the Pirates and should get assigned to Single-A to begin the year. Griffin has a very high ceiling as a 30/30 candidate whose defensive utility should keep him in the lineup every day.
