The Astros signed Cavaco to a minor-league contract Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The Twins used a first-round pick in the 2019 Draft on Cavaco but released him earlier this month after he hit just .212/.267/.335 with a 36.8 percent strikeout rate over five minor-league seasons. However, Darren Wolfson of Channel 5 Saint Paul notes that the Astros plan to use Cavaco as a pitcher. The 23-year-old has been assigned to the Astros' Florida Complex League affiliate, where he will begin the transition.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2020
For those searching for a hitting prospect with a very high fantasy ceiling and an affordable acquisition cost, Cavaco should be one of the first considerations. While he was a pop-up prospect as a senior in high school, the Twins selected him with the No. 13 overall pick in 2019, so he is not an unknown, he just struggled mightily in his brief pro debut in the Gulf Coast League (.172 AVG, 38.0 K% in 92 PA). It was a big jump in competition, as he had not been on the showcase circuit as an amateur. However, he remains an elite athlete and a swing adjustment led to a mini breakout during the fall instructional league. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound shortstop has plus raw power and plus speed and won't turn 20 until June, so there is plenty of time for him to flip the script. Batting average figures to be his worst fantasy category, but he has the tools to go 30/20, which few prospects can claim.
Cavaco offers up a chance to overreact or to buy low, depending on one's point of view. He was the top pop-up hitter in last year's draft class, showcasing five-tool potential on the left side of the infield. This led to the Twins selecting him with the 13th overall pick. His athleticism, defense, plus power and plus speed were not up for debate, but it was difficult to evaluate his hit tool because he didn't get to face much high-end pitching since he was not invited to the top prep showcase events. His right-handed swing looks pretty, but he hit .172 with a 38.0 K% and 4.3 BB% in 92 plate appearances in the Gulf Coast League. It is impossible to find a statistical silver lining in his debut, but it was also a tiny sample and his first exposure to that caliber of pitching. His physical tools are still intact, so if he rights the ship in his age-18/19 season, he will shoot up prospect rankings.
