ANALYSIS
Cowart hasn't appeared in the minors since 2019 due to an unspecified injury, but he began a rehab assignment in mid-July and will now join the Yankees' Double-A affiliate. The 30-year-old was a first-round pick by the Angels in 2010 but has been unable to secure a significant role over five years of major-league action.

Cowart is a glove-first infielder who has not yet shown an ability to handle major-league pitching. He has a .177/.241/.293 slash line in nearly 400 major-league appearances while he has hit much better than that in repeated years playing in hitter-friendly Salt Lake. His fantasy value could come on the basepaths as he has swiped 45 bases over the past three seasons in Triple-A, but he first has to demonstrate he can reach first base in the majors. He can accept a walk, but that has been his most favorable outcome because he has struggled mightily to make quality contact at the plate.
