2025 Fantasy Outlook
Verlander began the 2024 season on the IL with a shoulder issue. He debuted in mid-April and made 10 starts, before experiencing a neck issue. At the time, he posted a 3.95 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. However, a 4.98 xFIP, .263 BABIP and 81.6 percent left on base rate indicates he was fortunate. After spending almost 11 weeks on the IL, Verlander returned to make seven more starts with a bloated 8.10 ERA and 1.68 WHIP. Over this stretch, his xFIP was 5.42 with a .356 BABIP and 53.4 percent left on base level, demonstrating misfortune along with subpar pitching. Verlander's strikeout rate is in free-fall, and while his walk rate is still below average, it's creeping up. It's tempting to expect another rebound from a guy who defied the odds after returning from Tommy John surgery when he was 39 years old. It's best to resist temptation. Read Past Outlooks

Gives up four runs in loss
Verlander (0-1) took the loss Tuesday against Philadelphia. He allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out one over 5.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Verlander put the Giants behind when he gave up two runs in the second inning, including a solo shot by J.T. Realmuto. Verlander recovered to toss three scoreless frames, but he was tagged for two more runs in the sixth inning and wasn't able to complete the frame. While he's generated a 32.6 percent whiff rate, Verlander has yet to make it out of the sixth inning in any of his four starts in 2025. He has a 6.75 ERA and 1.77 WHIP across 18.2 innings to begin the season, and he'll look to get back on track in his next start, tentatively slated for this weekend on the road against the Angels.

Verlander was not as awesome as he was in 2022, but 2023 was still a solid season for the 40 year old pitcher who became the first pitcher age 40 or older to have both 12 wins and an ERA below 3.25 since Bartolo Colon last did that in 2013. Even though Verlander split the season between the Mets and the Astros, his indicators and outcomes were not that dissimilar as he walked fewer batters with Houston but allowed more homers thanks to the change in home park dimensions. The list of pitchers doing well past the age of 40 also includes the likes of Clemens, Johnson, Smoltz, and Ryan. Smoltz faded at age 41 while Johnson and Clemens had their last good seasons at 42. Verlander turns 41 before the start of the season and even has a player option he can exercise for 2025 if he reaches 140 innings in 2024. You should anticipate statistical decline as Verlander continue to age like a fine wine while also considering 2024 may be the final year we see this future Hall of Famer pitch.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Multiple teams interested
Verlander has received attention from multiple teams in free agency, per Jon Morosi of MLB Network.
ANALYSIS
Morosi didn't specify which teams might be taking a look at Verlander, though it would make the most sense for him to sign a one-year deal with a club that's pushing for a World Series title in 2025. The veteran right-hander will turn 42 in February and is coming off an injury-shortened season that saw him finish with a 5.48 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 90.1 innings.
