The Rangers signed Chargois to a minor-league deal Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Chargois pitched for Miami and Seattle in 2024, posting a 3-1 record, 2.23 ERA and 1.02 WHIP across 36 relief appearances. However, despite the impressive numbers, he was designated for assignment by the Mariners in November and will now look to eventually earn a spot in Texas' bullpen.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2017
Chargois returned to the majors after spending 2020 in Japan. He had a rough go of things overseas and struggled with the Dodgers in 2019, so the best he could muster was a minor-league deal with Seattle. He got the call in May and looked like a completely different pitcher, carving out much better ratios for the Mariners than his previous stint in the bigs. Chargois talllied nine holds for Seattle with a 3.00 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 29:6 K:BB over 30 innings before Tampa Bay acquired him via trade. His walk rate with the Rays was much higher, but he still performed well in high-leverage with five wins and six holds for his new team. Chargois has yet to record a save in his career, but Kevin Cash likes to mix and match in the ninth inning and it's possible he enters the mix in 2022. However, he's likely to pitch most of his innings in middle relief.
Chargois has one role -- being the ROOGY that comes in when manager Dave Roberts wants to squash a rally with a double play or a couple of strikeouts. Chargois was nasty against righties last year, limiting them to a .202/.307/.273 clip and striking out 30% of them. Of the 18 hits allowed to righties, just four went for extra bases. His high fastball/slider combination is easier for lefties to figure out (.276/.364/.690), which is why Roberts rarely uses the reliever against lefties. The repertoire and splits are likely to leave Chargois in his role moving forward unless he adds a cutter to the mix to give lefties something else to think about. He is safe to leave on the free-agent pile on draft day, even in deeper leagues, until we see if a third pitch is in the fold this spring.
Chargois put together a strong campaign at Triple-A Rochester, notching a 1.29 ERA with 41 strikeouts against just eight walks in 35.0 innings. He struggled in his first tour of the majors with a 4.70 ERA and ugly 17:12 K:BB ratio. With a fastball that can reach the high 90s and strong strikeout rates (10.5 K/9 at Triple-A), Chargois will contend for a bullpen role this spring.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Activation coming Monday?
PMiami Marlins  AAA
May 14, 2023
Chargois, who is on the injured list with an oblique injury, could soon be activated after the Marlins placed A.J. Puk on the shelf Sunday due to an elbow issue without making a corresponding roster move, per Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald.
ANALYSIS
Chargois pitched Friday and Saturday during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville, which may have been his final hurdle before returning from the injured list. The right-hander was off to a strong start with five scoreless appearances this season before going down with the oblique strain.
