PLos Angeles Dodgers  AAA
July 3, 2024
The Dodgers sent Feyereisen outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Feyereisen was optioned to Triple-A on June 21 after posting an 8.18 ERA in 11 innings with the big-league club, and he has now officially lost his 40-man spot to Matt Gage. The 31-year-old Feyereisen hasn't found much success in the minors this season either (6.75 ERA in 18.2 innings), so a return to the big leagues in 2024 doesn't seem likely given Los Angeles' bullpen depth.

Stat Review
How does J.P. Feyereisen compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9

Feyereisen missed the entire 2023 campaign after undergoing right rotator cuff and labrum surgery in December 2022. When healthy, the 30-year-old has been an effective reliever at the MLB level, posting a 2.31 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 85 strikeouts over 89.2 career innings. His walk rate is elevated at 12 percent, but he managed to walk only 5.8 percent of the batters he faced across 22 scoreless appearances the last time he pitched during the 2022 season. Feyereisen should be ready to go this spring and if health permits, he should be part of the Dodgers' high-leverage mix in 2024.
When healthy, Feyereisen has been an effective reliever at the MLB level, posting a 2.31 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 23.8% strikeout rate across 89.2 career innings. Many of those innings have come in high leverage, especially last season when the right-hander didn't allow a single earned run over 22 appearances and posted career-best 5.8% walk rate for Tampa Bay. Unfortunately, shoulder injuries have nagged Feyereisen the past two years. He underwent surgery in December to clean up his rotator cuff and labrum and injury will keep him out for a large chunk of the 2023 season. Feyereisen was subsequently DFA'd by the Rays, then traded to the Dodgers, who hopes to have him ready in late August at the earliest.
Feyereisen was one of the two relievers acquired by Tampa Bay in late May for Willy Adames, and the reliever found success in spurts. His stuff is lively, if not too lively given his issues finding the strike zone with consistency (career 14.0 BB%). He is tough to square up with a career .172 average against in just over 65 innings of work, but command issues have led to a few tight situations which he has thus far been able to escape from more often than not. He has the repertoire of a starter, which is unusual for someone who has never started a major-league game. Milwaukee and Tampa Bay share similar pitching philosophies, so it is not like J.P. had to come over and unlearn one approach while learning another one. There are a few relievers in this bullpen with the potential for multiple saves, but Feyereisen will not be high on the list unless the command improves.
