2024 Fantasy Outlook
Winckowski had a nice 2023 season out of Boston's bullpen, posting a 2.88 ERA over 84.1 innings with four wins, three saves and 18 holds across 60 appearances. The 25-year-old added velocity (+2.2 mph) on his sinker that he threw 96.3 mph on average, which ultimately induced more whiffs. He also threw more cutters (+24.5% usage over 2022) and his strikeout rate took a big jump, from 13.9% in 2022 to 22.3% last season. This mark was still below league average, but the right-hander maintained a high ground ball rate (51.2%) despite issuing free passes at an 8.4% clip. Red Sox manager Alex Cora recently suggested Winckowski could get a look in the rotation in 2024, which syncs up with how he was used throughout the minors and his rookie season. However, his numbers are much worse as a starter (5.66 ERA, 1.55 WHIP over 68.1 innings), which could warrant a relief role after all. Read Past Outlooks
Earns first save
Winckowski threw a perfect inning and earned a save against the White Sox on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Winckowski made his second appearance since being recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Aug. 27. In those two outings, he's combined to toss four scoreless innings, dropping his season ERA to 4.10. Boston's ninth-inning job appears to be somewhat open at the moment with Kenley Jansen (lat) sidelined for an indefinite period. Winckowski now has four career saves, with the previous three coming during the 2023 campaign.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Winckowski made his major-league debut last season but failed to impress with a 5.89 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 44:27 K:BB in 70.1 innings. The right-hander had a solid strikeout rate throughout his minor-league career, but that didn't immediately follow him to the big leagues as it was a measly 13.9 percent. However, he had a 51.9 percent groundball rate and a 4.61 xFIP indicates he wasn't helped out much by Boston's defense. Winckowski is likely to see the majors again in 2023, but more highly-touted prospects like Brandon Walter, Chris Murphy and Connor Seabold could have a leg up for any starting opportunities.

The Red Sox placed Cooper Criswell on the COVID-19 list Friday, and Winckowski could be in the mix to fill the open rotation spot Saturday against the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Winckowski likely wouldn't be able to work as a traditional starter given he threw 39 pitches over 2.2 innings Wednesday in Kansas City, but he should still be able to cover a couple frames if called upon Saturday. The right-hander has started in five of his 24 appearances this season and has a combined 3.44 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 37:20 K:BB across 49.2 innings.
