Jose Herrera

Jose Herrera

27-Year-Old CatcherC
Arizona Diamondbacks
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Herrera opened 2024 in Triple-A but eventually reclaimed the top backup catching job during the second half of the season. He's one of four catchers on the 40-man roster and will compete once again to be the backup to Gabriel Moreno. Prospect Adrian Del Castillo and veteran Rene Pinto are also in camp. Del Castillo, who exhibited offensive prowess during a brief callup last year, still has work to do defensively. That benefits a defense-first backstop like Herrera, who has been with the organization since 2014 and is familiar with the staff. There's not much to be excited about with a stick in Herrera's hands. He has a.537 career OPS in 130 games over the last three seasons. Read Past Outlooks

Out of options
CArizona Diamondbacks
February 15, 2025
Herrera is out of minor-league options as he prepares to compete for the backup catcher job in spring training, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
That Herrera is out of options gives him an advantage in the quest to back up primary catcher Gabriel Moreno. Herrera's advanced defense is another edge over Adrian Del Castillo, who crushed the ball during his MLB debut last season. It's likely the Diamondbacks have Del Castillo head back to Triple-A Reno to hone his defense, while Herrera, who has earned trust in the Arizona clubhouse, grabs a roster spot for Opening Day.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
Herrera unexpectedly won the backup catcher job in 2023 thanks to Carson Kelly starting the year on the IL with a forearm injury. It was the second consecutive season he suited up on Opening Day. Once Kelly returned in June, Herrera was on the Triple-A to MLB shuttle for rest of the season. He finished with 124 plate appearances, and his .557 OPS never threatened to usurp the starting gig from Gabriel Moreno. Herrera enters spring training as the top backup, but will have competition after the Diamondbacks signed Tucker Barnhart and gave him an invite to camp.
Herrera won the backup catcher job behind Carson Kelly for the Diamondbacks going into last season, but the team wound up using Daulton Varsho more than expected at the position. That meant Herrera often operated as the third catcher when he wasn't back at Triple-A Reno, and he managed a lowly .457 OPS at the plate when he did get his chances. Varsho has since been traded to the Blue Jays, but now Herrera has Gabriel Moreno to contend with. He's unlikely to see much action in the majors in 2023 and even if he did it's not a profile for fantasy managers to get excited about.
Herrera is expected to make his MLB debut in 2022, beating out Juan Graterol for the backup job to starter Carson Kelly. Daulton Varsho is also around, but he's needed for center field. Herrera slashed .248/.346/.705 over seven minor-league seasons (393 games).
