Cast off 40-man roster
The White Sox outrighted Stiever to Triple-A Charlotte on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Though Chicago didn't previously announce that Stiever was designated for assignment, he was apparently moved off the 40-man roster and will now stick around in the organization upon clearing waivers. Once one of the White Sox's more promising starting pitching prospects, Stiever has covered just 85.1 innings between the majors and Triple-A since the start of the 2020 season while missing considerable time due to a lat injury.

2021 Fantasy Outlook
Due to the cancellation of the 2020 minor-league campaign, Stiever got a chance to debut in the majors last season despite never having pitched above High-A ball. Unsurprisingly, the results weren't pretty, as the right-hander yielded seven earned runs and served up four homers over 6.1 innings. He also issued four free passes and struck out only three batters in his two appearances. The poor numbers are likely more an indication of a lack of seasoning and small sample size than a fruitless skillset, as Stiever has averaged more than a strikeout per inning in the minors while demonstrating good control (1.9 BB/9 over 179 career frames). His fastball can hit the upper 90s and is paired with a plus curveball, though his other offerings could use some work. Stiever needs more time to develop and should open 2021 in the minors but could ultimately fit in as a mid-rotation starter.
