2024 Fantasy Outlook
Ornelas, fresh off an addition to the 40-man roster, opened 2023 at Triple-A Round Rock in the hitter friendly Pacific Coast League. Only it wasn't too friendly for Ornelas, who ranked last in the PCL among qualified hitters with a .727 OPS, down 58 points from a promising 2022 season at Double-A Frisco. He's one of a few infield prospects that have nowhere to go at the major-league level. Either Ornelas or Justin Foscue could be used as a trade piece to acquire bullpen help and/or a designated hitter, the Rangers' most pressing needs. Ornelas spent most of his time at shortstop in 2023 but also saw time at second base and center field. Those positions in the majors, too, are locked in for the next few seasons, so working as a backup infielder might be his ticket to the majors if he remains in the organization. Read Past Outlooks

Returning to bench role
Ornelas is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Ornelas will hit the bench after he started in each of the last three games, with the last two coming at third base while Josh Smith (glute) was out of the lineup. With Smith returning to his usual post at the hot corner for Sunday's series finale, however, Ornelas looks poised to see light usage moving forward as a utility infielder.

Possible promotion coming?
Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News speculates Ornelas could be called up by the Rangers to provide infield depth after Josh Jung sustained a broken thumb Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Ornelas was added to the 40-man roster last November in order to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, though he's been underwhelming at Triple-A Round Rock this season with a .250/.360/.348 slash line in 88 contests. The 23-year-old is unlikely to see significant playing time for the contending Rangers if promoted, so he would offer minimal fantasy appeal.
