2025 Fantasy Outlook
Mantiply was hurt early in 2023 which played a role in a down season, but a strong September portended a bounce back in 2024. His 3.92 ERA and 41.9 hard-hit percentage last season doesn't scream success, but a 2.51 FIP indicates bad luck was at play. The lefty is consistently capable of inducing groundballs - 54.1 groundball rate in 2024 and 53.2 for his career - and limiting home runs. Entering his age-34 season, Mantiply does not overpower hitters and relies on a diet of sinkers, curveballs and changeups. If healthy, he'll earn a spot in the bullpen, where he'll work anywhere between the sixth and eighth innings while occasionally facing a difficult lefty to the final out of an inning. Added to closer mix
In discussing Arizona's closer role, manager Torey Lovullo mentioned Mantiply as someone that could get save opportunities, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. "I don't want to dismiss Joe Mantiply," Lovullo said. "He's really good against lefties. So I don't know what the answer is, but I'll probably go more matchup based for right now until it's the right time to make that decision."

Mantiply made the All-Star team for the first time in 2022 after a strong first half that saw him compile a 2.21 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 38:2 K:BB ratio over 36.2 innings. The D'Backs' lefty wasn't as good after the All-Star break (3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP), but he had the best walk rate among relievers for much of the season and finished 2nd in the category with a 2.5% clip. Mantiply was also adept at inducing ground balls (53.5%) and getting hitters to chase balls out of the zone, as his 42.9% O-Swing was 4th-best among relievers. The southpaw doesn't throw hard - his sinker averages just 90.4 mph - but his curve and change are effective secondary offerings. If he maintains elite command and continues improving his strikeout rate after a 3.6% jump from 2021, more save opportunities could be in the cards, as he doesn't have much competition in the Arizona pen.
