Joins Boston for spring camp
The Red Sox signed Bandy to a minor-league contract Monday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Bandy's deal includes an invitation to big-league spring training, giving the Red Sox another catcher while Kevin Plawecki remains on the COVID-19 injured list. Assuming Plawecki is fully healthy by the time Opening Day arrives, Bandy likely won't have a realistic chance at winning a backup catcher role with Boston. The 30-year-old last appeared in the big leagues in 2018 with the Brewers, slashing .188/.268/.266 in 71 plate appearances.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2017
2016
Bandy opened last season sharing the Brewers' catching duties with Manny Pina, and he owned an .839 OPS at the end of May. Things went south quickly from there, though, as he totaled just two hits in June and was optioned to the Triple-A ranks after the Brewers claimed fellow backstop Stephen Vogt. He would appear in just 17 big-league games from July onward and continued to struggle with the bat, ultimately finishing the season with just a .636 OPS. The Brewers have Bandy under team control for several more years, so he will get a chance to compete for a roster spot this spring. However, he will likely need to hit quite a bit in spring training to beat out either Vogt or Pina -- who led Brewers catchers in 2017 with 107 games -- to come away with one.
