Pena's 2024 and 2025 seasons look somewhat similar in the counting categories until you realize he nearly equaled or bested most of them in more than 100 fewer plate appearances. Pena was limited to 125 games due to a fractured rib and a left oblique strain later in the season. Pena was pacing to a career season at the plateacross the board, but fantasy managers were likely most surprised by the nearly 40-point improvement in his batting average after witnessing him average .261 over the previous three seasons. Pena continues to be a high-contact hitter but accepted a few more walks when he was not crushing fastballs. Pena hit half his home runs off fastball along with a .350 average (.323 xBA) agsinst fastballs but that success came at the peril of hitting .182 while swinging and missing at nearly 50% of the offspeed pitches he saw. A fully healthy Pena has 30-30 potential with his home park, his pull tendencies, and road games in Sacramento on the schedule in 2026. Analysis
Pena had sat out the Astros' last six games due to a left oblique strain, and with Houston officially getting eliminated from playoff contention following Saturday's action, he won't be called on to play in Sunday's season finale. The Astros recalled outfielder Jacob Melton from Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move, but the team hasn't suggested that Pena's oblique strain will affect his offseason plans. The shortstop put together his best campaign in the majors so far, besting his previous career high in OPS by 125 points.

Pena fanned less and walked more than he did in his rookie season. Pena's average exit velocity and hard-hit rate were essentially the same. However, he flattened his swing, resulting in more grounders and a three mph drop in flyball average exit velocity, cutting his HR/FB mark in half. The change helped boost his BABIP by 25 points, but Pena's power was crushed as he left the yard only 10 times, 12 fewer times than his first season, despite 76 more plate appearances. He stole two more bases, but he profiled as someone who would take advantage of the new rules. It was sage to expect Pena to fall short of his freshman season, but the way he did it was curious, morphing into an extreme groundball hitter. From a fantasy perspective, Pena's transition is better for batting average, but he doesn't steal ample bases to be a top tier shortstop unless he reverts to hitting more flyballs. Pena is why tracking stats when drafting is precarious. He's likely going to be a fantasy asset, but the distribution of his stats has a wide range of possibilities.

Extension talks between Pena and the Astros have been put on hold after the 27-year-old shortstop changed his representation, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
