2025 Fantasy Outlook
Estrada's 2024 campaign will best be remembered for his remarkable run over a three-outing stretch in May during which he struck out an MLB expansion-era record 13 consecutive batters. That accomplishment is even more impressive considering the righty reliever was a waiver-wire acquistion by San Diego the previous November. Though he wasn't quite that dominant over the entire campaign, Estrada's overall performance was certainly a breakout, as he posted a 2.95 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and dominant 37.3% strikeout rate over 61 innings while collecting six wins, 16 holds and a save. The 26-year-old's Statcast metrics scream closer material -- last season, he ranked above the 90th percentile in fastball velocity, chase rate, whiff rate and strikeout percentage -- though Robert Suarez will likely retain that role for San Diego to begin 2025 given his strong showing last year. Estrada should serve as a late-inning, high-leverage option, however, and his ability to rack up punchouts provides some appeal in most fantasy leagues, with considerably more value in those that count holds. Secures second save
Estrada pitched a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Top relievers Robert Suarez, Jason Adam and Adrian Morejon had all pitched the previous two days, allowing Estrada a chance to convert his second save of the season. He's earned both of his saves a week apart while also functioning as a setup man when the Padres' bullpen is fresher. Estrada is at a 2.36 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 40:9 K:BB across 26.2 innings this season, and he's added 11 holds. While he doesn't have much of a chance at steady save opportunities, his high strikeout rate makes him a viable option in some fantasy formats.

Which closers have most improved their ranking so far this season, and which have tumbled down the list?

San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. had a WAR of 2.4 in April, equaling Mets star Pete Alonso at the top of the National League for the first month of the MLB season.

Closers aren't the only type of relievers who can provide value in points leagues, with the St. Louis Cardinals' Matthew Liberatore heading a list of under-utilized arms.
Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Estrada was claimed on waivers by the Padres in November after pitching 10.2 innings with the Cubs in 2023. The results weren't great as Estrada had a 6.75 ERA and 2.25 WHIP while striking out just over a batter-per-inning. Estrada has big strikeout stuff as shown by his 13.72 K/9 at Triple-A, but he's been way to hittable over the last two seasons, especially at the major league level. While Yuki Matsui and Robert Suarez should compete for the Padres' closer role, Estrada will likely be used in middle relief, but has major upside if he ever found his way into a high leverage role due to the strikeouts.
