2025 Fantasy Outlook
Most eyes were on the other 22-year-old pitcher on the staff, but Jones more than held his own in his rookie season as one of just four pitchers of that age to work at least 100 major league innings in 2024. Jones made the club out of camp but missed some time over the summer with a Grade 2 lat strain. Jones' ERA was on the high side overall thanks to a below average home-run rate, but that can be forgiven with such a young pitcher. Had Jones not been pitching behind a generational phenom of a pitcher, his season would be looked at in a better light by many. You should be encouraged how Pittsburgh has managed to keep Jones's workload around 125 to 135 innings each of the past three seasons while developing him. We should not expect him to come out working 170-plus innings this season, but the organization has clearly been very deliberate in their management of Jones. The next step will be to find a more usable third pitch, as neither his curveball or changeup are there yet, neither by outcomes nor other underlying indicators. He was still rather split neutral despite the lack of a quality third pitch, which really speaks to how impressive his fastball and slider combination is right now. Read Past Outlooks

Could start throwing in September
Jones (elbow) will meet with his surgeon, Dr. Keith Meister, in early September and could be cleared to begin a throwing program if all goes well during his checkup, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis
Nearly four months removed from surgery to repair a UCL tear in his right elbow, Jones thus far hasn't hit any snags in the early stages of his recovery and could soon take his first major step forward by beginning to play catch. At the time Jones' surgery was performed May 21, the Pirates estimated that he would be ready to pitch in games approximately 10-to-12 months later, so the right-hander would appear to have an outside chance of being ready for Opening Day in 2026. Jones' outlook for next season likely won't become clearer until spring training, when the Pirates should have an update regarding where he stands in his throwing program.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Jones went from potential closer-of-the-future in Pittsburgh to a good enough strike thrower and craftsman to project as a high-strikeout starter. His 70-grade four-seamer has excellent ride and sits at 96 mph while touching 100 mph. The 6-foot-1 righty also throws a plus 89-mph slider that touches 94 mph and adequate third and fourth pitches in his curveball and changeup. His 8.9 percent walk rate at Double-A was excellent given his age (21) and electric arsenal. The 9.7 percent walk rate he posted at Triple-A may seem a bit high, but that mark is actually pretty encouraging given his age and the automated balls and strikes system at the top level of the minors. Jones threw 126.1 total innings and could surpass 150 innings in his age-22 season. He is on track to join the big-league rotation sometime this season.
