2018 Fantasy Outlook
Prior to the rebuild that begun this offseason, the Marlins had the worst farm system in baseball, with Nelson serving as the lone bright spot, at least for dynasty-league purposes. Intriguing young position players have been a rarity on the farm for Miami, but Nelson fits the bill, profiling as an everyday third baseman with prototypical offensive production for the position. He is still developing as a hitter, as evidenced by his 106:26 K:BB in 102 games at Low-A, so he will need to improve his pitch recognition and plan of attack. Nelson has plus bat speed that could eventually lead to 25-plus homer power in the majors. His .399 BABIP helped inflate his batting average in his first full season, but he has a good swing path and projects to eventually hit .270 or .280 in the big leagues. Given Nelson's lack of pedigree (15th round pick in 2016) and the disdain many have for the Marlins' farm system, he should be available on the cheap for one more offseason.
