Signs contract extension
PTampa Bay Rays
November 4, 2024
The Rays signed Waguespack to a one-year, $1.3 million contract extension with a $1.5 million club option for 2026 on Monday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Waguespack, 31, missed much of the 2024 season with a shoulder injury, but during his time at Triple-A Durham he had a 32:5 K:BB over 22 innings. The right-hander finished the season healthy and should compete for an Opening Day roster spot, perhaps in a swingman role.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
This player will receive an outlook for the 2021 fantasy baseball season.
Waguespack's ascension to the majors last season came as a bit of a surprise as he hadn't done much to impress at the Triple-A level, posting a 5.14 ERA over two seasons. Nonetheless, the former Phillies farmhand soon settled in as a starter in Toronto's shallow rotation and posted a 5-5 record along with a 4.38 ERA (4.91 FIP) over 78 innings. Waguespack didn't do anything particularly well or remarkably poorly last season, falling in the 20th-50th percentile in most metrics, including walk rate (8.7%), strikeout rate (18.8%) and Hard% (38.7%). Those numbers are a logical settling point for a pitcher with an arsenal that features quantity (he deploys six different pitches) but average-at-best quality, including a fastball that clocks in at 92-93 mph with little spin. Waguespack could battle for a spot in the rotation in 2020, but there's little reason to expect a significant leap in his performance.
