Perez went 1-for-5 with a home run in Sunday's game with Single-A Carolina.
ANALYSIS
Perez had a tough time at the Single-A level last season, and he has not done much early this year, tallying just three hits over 29 at-bats. However, all three of those have went for extra bases, and some struggles can be expected for a player who is nearly two years younger than league average. Perez is one of the better prospects in the Brewers' system, so don't be surprised if he takes off at some point.

A year ago, Perez was one of the most highly-regarded players from the 2019 international signing class, seen as an advanced hitter with plus speed and a plus arm. Since then, the scouting report has trended in the wrong direction. His power is actually ahead of schedule -- his exit velocities are elite for a teenager and he gets to his power with rare ease for a player his age and size (generously listed at 5-foot-11). Unfortunately, his hit tool, which was once seen as perhaps his best future skill, is now a big question mark. He struck out too much in complex ball (25.8 K%) and at Low-A (36.8 K%) and his 4.5 BB% across the two levels was also subpar. Additionally, his plus speed and plus arm are no more, with him now profiling best in left field. Perez doesn't turn 19 until April, so if he can show an improved approach in a return to Low-A, his stock will rebound. However, there's also room for him to continue to slip down prospect rankings.
Perez, who signed with the Brewers at 16 for $700,000 in July 2019, had the honor of being the youngest player invited to his team's alternate training site this past summer. He may not have been invited if he were in a different organization, but the Venezuelan center fielder is arguably already the Brewers' top prospect, so it wasn't a surprise in that sense. The word "advanced" always seems to lead off his scouting report and he is fluent in English, which also helped him get the invite. He has a picturesque left-handed swing that is geared for contact and power. Perez is also a plus runner with a plus arm, giving him the chance to be a true five-tool player in the majors. Naturally, the hype surrounding him in dynasty leagues is mounting, so he won't come cheap, but he has the chance to develop into a top-10 prospect in the game, so there is a case for buying high before he makes his pro debut.
Hedbert has seen a late surge up prospect rankings following reports from the informal Tricky League and the fall instructional league that suggest he is one of the top talents from the July 2, 2019 international signing class. He does not turn 17 until April, but is already a special talent on both sides of the ball. The Venezuelan outfielder is fluent in English and has above-average raw power to go with plus speed. At 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, he has a mature build, which allows him to impact the baseball regularly. Perez also has a keen awareness of the strike zone, so it would not be surprising if his walk rate was similar to his strikeout rate in his pro debut. He may head to the Dominican Summer League initially, but could reach the AZL before the end of his age-17 season. Perez lacks a clear weakness in his game, showing the potential to be a five-tool center fielder with the upside to someday be a top-10 prospect in baseball.
