2025 Fantasy Outlook
Through his first few seasons in the majors, Wesneski looks more comfortable as a reliever than a starter. The righty has a 3.56 ERA across 81 career innings in relief, compared to a 4.21 ERA when starting. Wesneski also has a higher career K/9 and lower batting average against as a reliever, with his stuff seemingly playing up in shorter spurts. That said, the Astros may be inclined to give Wesneski one last shot as a starter after acquiring him in the Kyle Tucker trade. The 26-year-old is at least capable of covering multiple innings out of the bullpen, and he could snag some wins if he were to end up in relief, though long relievers are hard to count on for consistent fantasy value. If Wesneski is able to slide into the rotation for Houston, his outlook would improve. Read Past Outlooks

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Wesneski turned a strong spring training into the No. 5 spot in Chicago's rotation to begin the 2023 campaign, though he failed to do a ton with the opportunity. The righty finished with a 4.63 ERA and 83 strikeouts across 89.1 innings, making 11 starts and appearing in 34 games overall. His 5.48 FIP and .258 BABIP suggest that Wesneski's middling ERA could have been worse, and if he regresses closer to a 5.00 ERA in 2024, fantasy managers will want to look elsewhere. However, there are still a few encouraging signs here. Wesneski struck out 28 batters in only 20 innings while with Triple-A Omaha last year, and he had good strikeout numbers earlier in his minor-league career as well. If the 26-year-old can miss a few more bats at the MLB level, he may be poised to take a step forward and post better overall numbers. A complicating factor is where Wesneski will slot in for the Cubs. Justin Steele, Jameson Taillon and Kyle Hendricks are all locked into starting jobs, and Javier Assad, Caleb Kilian and Jordan Wicks are in the mix behind the aforementioned trio. Wesneski may then end up serving as a long reliever, which would cap his fantasy value.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Could be dealt to Houston
The Astros are close to acquiring Wesneski, Isaac Paredes and Cam Smith from the Cubs in exchange for Kyle Tucker, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Wesneski, who is a Houston native, split time between starting and relieving for the Cubs in 2024, collecting a 3.86 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 67:21 K:BB over 67.2 innings. The 27-year-old would likely be stretched out in spring training, although his ultimate role in 2025 could depend on what else the Astros do this offseason and how healthy the likes of Lance McCullers, recovering from forearm trouble, and Luis Garcia, who underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2023, are to begin the campaign.
