Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Weissert has yet to break through in high-leverage at the big league level, but he may be in line for more late-game opportunities after an offseason trade from the Yankees to the Red Sox. The 29-year-old has racked up 51 saves in the minors since 2016, but his strikeout prowess has yet to translate in the majors with a near league average strikeout rate through 31.1 career innings. Weissert slightly improved his walk rate in his limited sample last year, but if he continues making strides with his control during spring training, he'll have a much better shot of breaking camp with the Red Sox. The right-hander's chances of entering Boston's high-leverage mix will only increase if the team elects to trade its veteran relievers on expiring contracts (Kenley Jansen and Chris Martin).
Weissert made his big-league debut last August at age 27 after tallying 18 saves, a 1.69 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 70:19 K:BB over 48 innings for the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate. The right-hander features a mid-90s sinker and ridiculous slider that got plenty of attention on social media when he threw one with 21 inches of horizontal break. He also throws the occasional fastball and changeup to left-handed hitters. Weissert didn't record any saves with the Yankees, but tallied three wins and one hold in a mostly lower-leverage relief role. He walked five batters in his 11.1 innings, but only gave up six hits for an impressive 0.97 WHIP. Weissert figures to break camp with New York this spring and will likely get an opportunity to climb their leverage ladder. He should be in play for AL-only formats and deeper mixed leagues with possible save chances on the horizon if he pitches well.

Remains in plans
PNew York Yankees
March 28, 2023
According to Marly Rivera of ESPN.com, manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Weissert is "a big leaguer" and "will be an important part of this team" despite missing the Opening Day roster.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but it should only be a matter of time before he rejoins the major-league club. Weissert had a 5.56 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB over 11.1 frames in his first taste of the big leagues last season, and he was dominant at Triple-A with a 1.69 ERA and 36.8 percent strikeout rate.
