Stat Review
How does Greg Jones compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

Jones, the No. 22 overall pick in 2019, turns 23 in March and has still not played in a full-season league. These are the types of hitting prospects who were arguably hurt the most by the lack of a true minor-league season. He would have spent the bulk of the year at High-A in a normal year. He was a late addition to the alternate training site, but just getting the invite at all in a system as loaded as Tampa Bay's was an accomplishment. The switch hitter can play any up-the-middle position, thanks to his plus-plus speed. The Rays covet this type of player, which is part of the problem. Tampa Bay already has a crowded MLB roster, and up-the-middle prospects Wander Franco, Josh Lowe, Vidal Brujan, Xavier Edwards and Taylor Walls are on the way. A trade would boost Jones' dynasty value, as he could still develop into a leadoff hitter who hits double-digit homers and steals 25-plus bases.
Hitters with Jones' tools typically don't make it to a college campus unless there are concerns about the hit tool, and he was no different. Arguably the fastest player in the 2019 draft class, Jones was selected with the No. 22 overall pick out of UNC Wilmington and greatly exceeded expectations in the New York-Penn League. His 29.1 LD% and 10.1 BB% were particularly impressive. The 6-foot-2 switch hitter could eventually develop fringe-average game power, but he was focused on playing the role of table setter in his debut (52.2 GB% and 40.0 Oppo%). Jones was only 19-for-27 (70.4%) on stolen-base attempts, but he has at least 70-grade speed and has 40-plus steal upside if he maintains a high OBP. For fantasy, think of him as Xavier Edwards with significantly more swing and miss. Like Edwards, there's a chance Jones ends up at second base or center field, but he will keep playing shortstop for now.

Getting look in outfield
OFTampa Bay Rays  AAA
March 8, 2023
Jones is going to get a look in the outfield, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
A 2019 first-round pick, Jones was drafted as a shortstop, but that's a position in which the Rays have plenty of depth and is spearheaded at the big-league level by Wander Franco. One of the fastest players in the system, Jones could be an option in center field for Tampa Bay and also has the ability to play up the middle as a utility option. The 25-year-old hit just .238 with a .710 OPS over 358 plate appearances for Double-A Montgomery in 2022, but he did steal 37 bases in 42 attempts for the Biscuits.
