2025 Fantasy Outlook
The Rays traded Jones to the Rockies late in spring training. He opened the season with Triple-A Alburquerque but missed a month with an unspecified injury. Jones received his first taste of the majors in early June but only mustered six plate appearances in his two-week stay. He recorded just one hot, but it was a home run. For the season with the Isotopes, he posted a modest .806 OPS but swiped 46 bags in 49 tries. The switch-hitter fanned 35.2 percent of the time in the minors, which is his career average. Jones has plus speed with a little pop but his inability to make contact prevents him from showing off his tools. There's no indication he'll figure things out, so Jones is ticketed for another year on the farm. Read Past Outlooks

Claimed off waivers, sent to minors
OFChicago White Sox  AAA
March 26, 2025
The White Sox claimed Jones off waivers from the Rockies on Wednesday and optioned him to Triple-A Charlotte.
ANALYSIS
Jones will join the third organization of his career after he was initially drafted by the Rays in 2019 before being dealt to the Rockies last March. He appeared in six games in the majors with Colorado in 2024 but otherwise spent the entire season at Triple-A Albuquerque, where he produced a .269/.346/.460 batting line to go with 16 home runs and 46 stolen bases over 406 plate appearances. Though he'll report to the minors to begin the upcoming season, Jones should be in the mix for playing time in Chicago at some point in 2025, given the lack of established talent on the big-league roster.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
Jones, the No. 22 overall pick in 2019, turns 23 in March and has still not played in a full-season league. These are the types of hitting prospects who were arguably hurt the most by the lack of a true minor-league season. He would have spent the bulk of the year at High-A in a normal year. He was a late addition to the alternate training site, but just getting the invite at all in a system as loaded as Tampa Bay's was an accomplishment. The switch hitter can play any up-the-middle position, thanks to his plus-plus speed. The Rays covet this type of player, which is part of the problem. Tampa Bay already has a crowded MLB roster, and up-the-middle prospects Wander Franco, Josh Lowe, Vidal Brujan, Xavier Edwards and Taylor Walls are on the way. A trade would boost Jones' dynasty value, as he could still develop into a leadoff hitter who hits double-digit homers and steals 25-plus bases.
Hitters with Jones' tools typically don't make it to a college campus unless there are concerns about the hit tool, and he was no different. Arguably the fastest player in the 2019 draft class, Jones was selected with the No. 22 overall pick out of UNC Wilmington and greatly exceeded expectations in the New York-Penn League. His 29.1 LD% and 10.1 BB% were particularly impressive. The 6-foot-2 switch hitter could eventually develop fringe-average game power, but he was focused on playing the role of table setter in his debut (52.2 GB% and 40.0 Oppo%). Jones was only 19-for-27 (70.4%) on stolen-base attempts, but he has at least 70-grade speed and has 40-plus steal upside if he maintains a high OBP. For fantasy, think of him as Xavier Edwards with significantly more swing and miss. Like Edwards, there's a chance Jones ends up at second base or center field, but he will keep playing shortstop for now.

Getting look in outfield
OFTampa Bay Rays  AAA
March 8, 2023
Jones is going to get a look in the outfield, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
A 2019 first-round pick, Jones was drafted as a shortstop, but that's a position in which the Rays have plenty of depth and is spearheaded at the big-league level by Wander Franco. One of the fastest players in the system, Jones could be an option in center field for Tampa Bay and also has the ability to play up the middle as a utility option. The 25-year-old hit just .238 with a .710 OPS over 358 plate appearances for Double-A Montgomery in 2022, but he did steal 37 bases in 42 attempts for the Biscuits.
