2025 Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
There were signs that Springer was approaching a production cliff in his career, but nothing truly pointed to him having this type of falloff. Springer posted the worst batting average of his full-season career by nearly 40 points and failed to reach 20 homers in a full season for the first time since 2015 when he appeared in just 102 games. The walk rate and the contact rates remained constant, yet Springer's bat appeared at times as if it still had a weighted doughnut on it. Springer has made a career of feasting off fastballs, but hit just .241 against fastballs in 2024 and .192 against non-fastballs. He no longer has the juice to get into the elevate-and-celebrate crowd as his groundball to fly-ball ratio has dropped from 0.70 in 2021 to 1.54 this past season. His 50.7 percent groundball rate was the highest of his career, while his 39.8 percent pull percentage was a continuation of the 2023 struggles. His contract will guarantee him playing time in Toronto, but where that playing time comes in the lineup is anyone's guess. He no longer profiles as a top-of-the-lineup hitter, so his production could be further impacted hitting down in the lineup as Toronto either looks to make one final push in the Vlad era or begins a tear-down after multiple disappointing seasons. Springer is absolutely on his descent down the aging curve and appears to be in a rapidly accelerating phase at this time. Read Past Outlooks

Pops first spring homer
Springer went 1-for-3 with a walk and a three-run home run in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
The veteran outfielder finally connected on his first long ball of the spring when he drove a Jose Ruiz offering over the center-field fence in the third inning. Springer is still batting just .114 (4-for-35) through 14 Grapefruit League appearances, but he has an 8:9 BB:K and might finally be getting his timing down with Opening Day less than a week away. He's set for an everyday role in an outfield corner, and it's unlikely he'll shift back to center field to help cover for the early-season absence of Daulton Varsho (shoulder).

How does George Springer compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.
* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

George Springer's 2023 season surprised fantasy managers in many ways. The biggest surprise of them all is the 33 year old player eclipsed the 140 gamed played mark for the first time since he played all 162 in 2016. He also went out and posted the first 20-20 season of his career which was his first full season with even double-digit steals since the 2015 season. The 21 homers was a disappointment given the tweaks made to Rogers Centre to improve offense, but those improvements did not materialize into extra homers for anyone on the roster let alone Springer. His RBI production was held back with him hitting leadoff for most of the season and the bottom of the order not being on base as much as hoped. We cannot recommend looking for more of the same from this veteran given how much newness was introduced from Springer in 2023 as much as we can safely say repeating 20 homers is the only thing he is likely to repeat in 2024.

Not concerned with spring numbers
Springer says he feels good despite batting .107 (3-for-28) this spring with zero home runs, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. "I feel great, actually," Springer said. "For me, it's about the process. It's not about the results. I want to make sure that I'm swinging at the right pitches and getting my swing off. Yeah, obviously everyone would like to see the ball hit the grass, but for me specifically, I'm working on the mechanical side of it."

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Role not yet in question
Blue Jays manager John Scheider said Wednesday that he's "not nearly at the point" of significantly reducing Springer's playing time, reports Gregor Chisholm of the Toronto Star.
ANALYSIS
The veteran outfielder posted a career-worst .732 OPS last season, and his numbers have cratered in 2024 with a .197/.288/.291 slash line through 67 games. Springer's .094 ISO is less than half of his .205 mark from 2022, as his hard-hit rate of 33.7 percent and 5.5 percent barrel rate are career lows. A .252 xBA and .368 xSLG provide some room for optimism, but the Blue Jays are in need of results, as they sit in last place in the AL East with a 35-39 record.
