Misses out on Opening Day roster
The Giants reassigned Small to minor-league camp Wednesday, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Small spent most of last season on the Giants' 60-day injured list while recovering from a right oblique strain, and once he was finally activated from the IL in mid-August, he was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento. He struggled to a 6.00 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in nine innings with Sacramento before the Giants non-tendered him in November, only to re-sign him less than a month later on a minor-league deal. Small has enjoyed a healthy spring training but will head back to Sacramento to begin the 2025 season after falling short in his bid for a spot in the Giants' Opening Day bullpen.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Selected by the Brewers in the first round of the 2018 Draft, Small is coming off his first full season at the Triple-A level. The results were mixed, but he did do enough to make his first two appearances in the major leagues. Small mainly relies on a deceptive delivery and a fastball/changeup mix, and although he is hardly a hard thrower, he averaged over a strikeout per inning a season ago. He also posted a 5.1 BB/9 and issued eight free passes in his 6.1 big-league frames. Small has worked almost exclusively as a starter, but he presumably needs to develop a third pitch and cut down on the free passes before doing so with any regularity for a Brewers team stocked with starting pitchers. He will be entering his age-26 season, which makes this a pivotal campaign for his future.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Not considered for promotion
Small was not considered for a promotion from Triple-A to replace Keston Hiura on the Brewers' roster, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Despite being the International League Player of the Month for April, manager Craig Counsell said the team opted for Luis Perdomo because they needed a right-handed arm in the bullpen. Small, who pitches left-handed, has allowed two earned runs while striking out 31 over 23.1 innings, but his 16.5 percent walk rate is concerning.
