Pittsburgh Pirates
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Rodriguez went from one of the more anticipated catching prospects to reach the majors to all but forgotten after failing to play in the majors in 2024 due to an elbow injury. He did manage to log some plate appearances in the minor leagues to close the campaign and is expected to be ready for spring training in 2025. However, there are still more questions than answers for Rodriguez heading into the new campaign. He has only a 204 plate-appearance sample in the majors, and he also produced just a 95 wRC+ in his most significant stretch at Triple-A Indianapolis in 2023. There have also been questions about where Rodriguez settles defensively, as there are doubts about his ability to stick behind the plate. On the other hand, his ability to play second base and more specifically the corner outfield could serve him well in 2025. Midway through the offseason, the Pirates have done nothing to address their void in right field, with Rodriguez likely to emerge as a top option at the position with a solid spring training. The most prudent approach from a fantasy perspective is to monitor Rodriguez's progress from both a health and skills standpoint, but it wouldn't be a surprise if he gets himself back on the radar in deeper formats at some point in 2025. Stat Review
How does Endy Rodriguez compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Rodriguez's post-hype sleeper status will have to wait until 2025, as offseason right elbow surgery will sideline him through the 2024 season. He boasted a pristine track record of results in the minor leagues entering the 2023 season. Between his work with the bat and defensive versatility, it seemed that even the Pirates' conservative nature with prospects wouldn't prevent Rodriguez from bursting onto the big-league scene early in 2023. Things didn't quite go according to plan, however, as he scuffled his way to a 95 wRC+ across 315 plate appearances at Triple-A Indianapolis, and even once he found his way to the majors in mid-July, his struggles continued. In addition to his strikeout rate jumping to 24 percent, Rodriguez had just a 5.1 percent barrel rate. There's no sugarcoating his corresponding .220/.284/.328 line in 204 plate appearances in Pittsburgh. In addition to his excellent minor-league track record, Rodriguez posted a max exit velocity of 110.7 mph and walked at a respectable 8.3 percent clip -- suggesting both his power and patience have the chance to translate at the highest level when he returns to action in 2025.
Rodriguez put on an offensive masterclass last season, slashing .323/.407/.590 with a 19.0 K%, 11.3 BB%, 25 home runs and four steals in 125 games across the three highest levels of the minors. He primarily played catcher, but also played 18 games at second base, showcasing his versatility and decent athleticism relative to most catching prospects. Steamer even projects Rodriguez as a significantly above-average MLB hitter as a rookie (118 wRC+). There's essentially nothing to nitpick in the stats -- his strikeout rate dipped at every level he ascended to and he had an ISO north of .240 at all three levels. While Rodriguez is a solid athlete who can play other infield positions in a pinch, he isn't a Bo Naylor or Daulton Varsho type of stolen-base threat. There is no reason Rodriguez shouldn't debut sometime early in 2023, as he is already on the 40-man roster, but even the best catching prospects sometimes struggle initially against big-league pitching, and Rodriguez's team context will suppress counting stats.
