2024 Fantasy Outlook
Castillo was scooped up by Arizona when Pittsburgh designated him for assignment prior to 2023 spring training and spent all but one day at Triple-A Reno. He appeared to change his approach with the new organization, increasing his walk rate to 17.6 BB% and posting a .431 on-base percentage, while playing left field, second base, shortstop and third base. Overall, it was his best year in the minors - MiLB.com's Organizational All-Star rankings rated him the system's best second baseman - but it wasn't enough for the 26-year-old to hold onto a spot on the 40-man roster. He was jettisoned to make room for Lourdes Gurriel, who re-signed with Arizona. A return to Reno had been expected, but Castillo was claimed off waivers by the Mets. He's another in a string of fringe additions New York made during the offseason. He could fill an infield depth role behind Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil and Francisco Lindor. Read Past Outlooks
Outrighted to Triple-A
The Twins outrighted Castillo to Triple-A St. Paul on Friday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Castillo had been removed from the 40-man roster earlier this week following a brief stint with the big club. He could have elected free agency but instead has accepted the outright assignment and will remain in the organization.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Castillo made his big-league debut in 2022 and spent the majority of the season in Pittsburgh. At first glance, his 26.5 percent strikeout rate and .206 batting average suggest he was just another of the mediocre or worse options that the Pirates trotted out during the campaign. However, there's come intrigue with a deeper dive. As a prospect, Castillo was known for his hit tool and rarely struck out at clips higher than 15 percent while working his way through the minors. That number spiked in his first taste of the majors, but so did his potential to hit for power thanks to a 9.9 percent barrel rate and 109.6 mph max exit velocity. Assuming he can bring his strikeout rate back down to levels he showed while climbing through the Yankees' minor-league system, there's the potential of a player who can hit for both a solid average and solid power. Castillo was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh in December and subsequently traded to Arizona, where he could open 2023 in a utility role.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Starting at second in 2023?
Castillo will compete with Rodolfo Castro and Ji Hwan Bae for the starting second-base job in 2023, reports Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Castillo started the 2022 season with the Pirates and performed well through May before slumping badly in June and July and being optioned to Triple-A. The 25-year-old produced a .788 OPS and nine homers against lefties while compiling a .449 OPS and only two long balls against righties. He appeared at five different positions in 2022 and will likely find playing time even if he doesn't have a defined position.
