2025 Fantasy Outlook
Santana received a NRI from the Yankees last offseason, and while he didn't break camp with New York, he impressed during spring training and was recalled in early April. He spent two months in the Bronx, struggling to a 6.26 ERA and 1.35 WHIP across 27.1 innings before he was DFA'd. The 28-year-old righty was claimed by Pittsburgh a few days later and changed his approach, throwing fewer sinkers (.279 BAA, .395 SLG) in favor of more fastballs (.196 BAA, .268 SLG). Santana was much better with the Pirates, even making 21 consecutive appearances without permitting an earned run. He finished the campaign with career-highs in innings pitched (71.2) and WHIP (1.09), the latter being a notable improvement over his 1.32 mark for his career. Santana should open 2025 as one of Pittsburgh's highest-leverage relievers, which may include save chances if David Bednar does not reclaim the closer role. Read Past Outlooks

Secures second save
Santana struck out a batter and didn't allow a baserunner in two-thirds of an inning to earn the save in Thursday's 1-0 win against Washington.
ANALYSIS
Southpaw Ryan Borucki stayed in for the start of the ninth inning to face the lefty-hitting Nathaniel Lowe, but Santana was called upon to secure the final two outs of the combined shutout. Both relievers have received a look in save situations since the demotion of David Bednar at the start of April, but Borucki blew his only ninth-inning chance while Santana is 2-for-2 in converting save opportunities. The 29-year-old righty has pitched well early in 2025 with a 2.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 5:3 K:BB over nine innings.

After posting a 5.22 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with 54 punchouts over 58.2 innings in 63 appearances with the Rangers last season, the reliever was dealt to Atlanta in November. He was later designated for assignment and claimed by the Twins. He'll try to wni a bullpen role this spring. Santana will likely operate in low-leverage situations out of the bullpen if he does make the major league roster.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Dominating with Buccos
Santana has a 2.68 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 44:9 K:BB across 37 innings since being claimed off waivers by the Pirates in June.
ANALYSIS
Santana was designated for assignment by the Yankees after he posted a 6.26 ERA in 23 outings, and he surrendered six runs in his second appearance with the Pirates on June 15. Since that ugly outing though, he's allowed just five earned runs in 30 appearances. The 28-year-old journeyman is even in the closing mix for Pittsburgh given the struggles of David Bednar, though he's the clear No. 2 in the pecking order behind Aroldis Chapman. Santana has pitched for five big-league teams and spent time with seven organizations over the past four years, but he may have finally found his stride with the Pirates.
