Connor Thomas

26-Year-Old PitcherRP
Milwaukee Brewers
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Thomas, a 26-year-old lefty the Brewers poached from the Cardinals in the Rule 5 draft, had operated primarily as a starter until last season, in which 53 of his 56 appearances at Triple-A were out of the bullpen. He logged a 2.89 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 79:24 K:BB in 90.1 innings, so while he worked as a reliever, he is stretched out enough to move back to the rotation this year if the Brewers wanted to go that route at some point. More likely, Thomas will work as a low-leverage multi-inning reliever for Milwaukee or be returned to St. Louis at some point this season. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
The Brewers snagged Thomas from St. Louis in the Rule 5 draft, and the 26-year-old lefty has certainly made the most of the opportunity, giving up just two runs (one earned) in 9.1 innings this spring, striking out nine batters and walking five. He'll likely take on a middle-relief role to begin his tenure with the Brewers and will need to remain in Milwaukee all season; otherwise, he'll need to be offered back to the Cardinals.

Stat Review
How does Connor Thomas compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Thomas, a fifth-round pick in 2019, was added to the Cardinals' 40-man roster in November of 2022. His season-long numbers with Triple-A Memphis do little to excite, but Thomas finished with an impressive showing in the Arizona Fall League (1.75 ERA, 34:5 K:BB over six starts) which weighed heavily in the team's decision. The lefty explained to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that, with advise from pitching coach Mike Maddux and the organization's all-time saves leader Jason Isringhausen, he developed a cut fastball. The cutter gave him a weapon on the inner edge of the plate against right-handed batters and in turn allowed his other three pitches to play up in the AFL. It's clear the Cardinals believe this new version of Thomas has a major-league future whether it be as a starter or reliever.
