Missing bats at Double-A
PTampa Bay Rays  AAA
July 14, 2023
Wilcox has a 3.45 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 22 strikeouts in 15.2 innings over his last three starts for Double-A Montgomery.
ANALYSIS
He had a shaky stretch from April 28 through June 15 in which he had a 7.28 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over nine starts, but Wilcox has gotten back on track lately. The 6-foot-5 righty, who turned 24 on Friday, has built up to a career-high 66 innings after missing parts of 2021 and 2022 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. In addition to bat-missing stuff in his mid-90s fastball and hard-biting slider, Wilcox excels at generating weak contact (55 percent groundball rate).

Midseason Prospect Mailbag
June 29, 2023
James Anderson answers over 50 questions from readers about prospects, dynasty and redraft, including whether Rays phenom Junior Caminero will be the No. 2 overall prospect at season's end.
2021 Fantasy Outlook
Wilcox has long been on the MLB scouting radar due to his pure stuff, as scouts expect that he could develop three plus offerings in his arsenal. As a result, he drew strong interest from clubs in the 2018 draft, but he opted to enroll at the University of Georgia. After two seasons with the Bulldogs, Wilcox slipped to the 80th pick the in 2020 draft, once again due to his expected contract demands. Ultimately, he signed for $3.3 million -- well over slot value. Despite the pure stuff, there is concern surrounding Wilcox based on his delivery and ability to consistently throw quality strikes. As with many pitching prospects, that creates some reliever risk. After being dealt to the Rays in the offseason as part of the Blake Snell trade, Wilcox's future is even more uncertain, as Tampa Bay is well known for using pitchers in non-traditional roles.
