Rest-of-Season Projections
Heads to Texas on MiLB deal
The Rangers signed Heuer to a minor-league contract Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Heuer has been a free agent since November after being non-tendered by the Cubs. He missed much of the 2023 season after fracturing his right elbow, but he'll return to action with Texas as a depth arm at Triple-A Round Rock.

2021
Heuer underwent Tommy John surgery last March and missed the entirety of the 2022 season. The Cubs will welcome his return in 2023, but they'll likely have to wait a few months before he completes his rehab process. Give Heuer some time to regain his MLB footing, but if he's performing well upon his return, he's a decent saves spec for the second half of 2023.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Eyeing closer role
Heuer may earn closing opportunities after pitching two scoreless innings and earning his first Cubs save Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The righty has excelled since being dealt to the Cubs, posting a 1.80 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 10 innings across eight appearances. Heuer's 5.4 K/9 since the trade is a bit underwhelming, at least for a closer, but his fastball/slider/changeup mix is formidable and should translate to more strikeouts going forward. His primary competition is Manuel Rodriguez, who's bounced back with three consecutive scoreless innings after yielding five runs (two earned) in one-plus inning. Although save opportunities will be sparse for the lowly, post-deadline Cubs, Heuer's perfect outing Tuesday will certainly earn him more chances when the team does manage late-inning leads.
