Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Hampton (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery Friday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Hampton traveled back to New York earlier this week to have his right elbow examined and received the worst possible news. If there's a silver lining, it's that having the operation in February will give him a chance to return for the start of the 2026 season, or at least early on in the campaign. The 23-year-old right-hander is regarded as one of the Yankees' top pitching prospects after turning in a 2.41 ERA with 16 strikeouts across 18.1 innings at three minor-league levels in 2024.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Hampton wasn't a traditional pop-up prospect, as 2023 was his pro debut, but he went from unrostered in most dynasty leagues to a top-100 prospect thanks to a dominant run at High-A and an adequate run at Double-A as a 21-year-old. The 6-foot-2 righty was a sixth-round pick out of Texas Tech in 2022 and he logged a 2.68 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and an elite 32.1 K-BB% in nine High-A starts. His BB% remained constant (8.4 to 8.5) after the jump to Double-A, while his K% dipped from 40.5 to 27.4, resulting in a still solid 19.0 K-BB%. Hampton's strong command of a plus mid-90s fastball with excellent movement is the key to his success. Off that 60-grade fastball, his above-average slider and above-average curveball play well, and he also mixes in a cutter and changeup. A lot can go wrong with any pitching prospect, but with good health, Hampton looks like a safe bet to develop into a No. 3 starter in the majors. He should debut in late-2024 or early-2025.
