2026 Projections
Protected from Rule 5 Draft
The Yankees selected Hampton's (elbow) contract from Double-A Somerset on Tuesday.
Analysis
Hampton missed the entire 2025 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in February, yet the Yankees will still grant him a place on their 40-man roster to shield him from the Rule 5 Draft in December. The 24-year-old righty will likely be sent back to Double-A once he's fully healthy, though it remains unclear whether he'll be back to full strength by the beginning of the 2026 season.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Hampton wasn't a traditional pop-up prospect, as 2023 was his pro debut, but he went from unrostered in most dynasty leagues to a top-100 prospect thanks to a dominant run at High-A and an adequate run at Double-A as a 21-year-old. The 6-foot-2 righty was a sixth-round pick out of Texas Tech in 2022 and he logged a 2.68 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and an elite 32.1 K-BB% in nine High-A starts. His BB% remained constant (8.4 to 8.5) after the jump to Double-A, while his K% dipped from 40.5 to 27.4, resulting in a still solid 19.0 K-BB%. Hampton's strong command of a plus mid-90s fastball with excellent movement is the key to his success. Off that 60-grade fastball, his above-average slider and above-average curveball play well, and he also mixes in a cutter and changeup. A lot can go wrong with any pitching prospect, but with good health, Hampton looks like a safe bet to develop into a No. 3 starter in the majors. He should debut in late-2024 or early-2025.
