The Astros may look to use the 23-year-old regularly at second base while returning Jose Altuve to left field to provide aid for an outfield unit that has been hit hard by injuries recently.

Matthews, who was set to play in the All-Star Futures Game in Atlanta, was slashing .283/.400/.476 with 10 homers, 39 RBIs and 25 steals at Triple-A before the call-up. Matthews was a shortstop coming out of college, but he's been playing at second base lately, and he could move into the role in the bigs as well. Matthews is not on the 40-man roster, so the Astros would have to make a roster move to make him eligible to play Friday in the series opener against the Rangers.
