Anthony Bender

Anthony Bender

30-Year-Old PitcherRP
Miami Marlins
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Bender fully recovered from his late 2022 Tommy John surgery but never ascended into the closer role that he was beginning to embrace before his injury. Bender saved just one game but won five others out of the pen and resumed his effective approach of getting strikeouts and ground balls while allowing three homers in 53 innings of work. The primary reason the closer role has evaded him is that Bender has some extreme splits. His sinker/sweeper approach to righties limited them to a .251 wOBA last season, but lefties were much higher at .375, reaching base nearly 40 percent of the time. Bender lacks a usable weapon against lefties so he must rely on batted ball luck and location to find success against lefties, and neither of those happened often enough for him to find that success in 2024. His sinker/sweeper approach does not exactly lend itself to a new third pitch unless he were to add a cutter and lean on that against lefties. Until a new pitch shows up, Bender is unlikely to climb the leverage ladder in Miami with any success. Read Past Outlooks

Stat Review
How does Anthony Bender compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.

  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
Bender was sidelined for the full 2023 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery in August 2022. He was back on the mound last July and progressed to live batting practice sessions a few months later, so he figures to be fully healthy for spring training. Bender handled closing duties for the Marlins as recently as 2022, so he could re-emerge in high leverage if health permits this season. The 28-year-old is likely behind several others in Miami's bullpen for save chances, though, and the first hurdle he needs to clear is proving he's healthy.
Bender stepped in as the Marlins closer to open the 2022 season with Dylan Floro beginning the year on the IL. The 27-year-old racked up six saves in April, but scuffled a bit out of the gates and took a step back from closing duties in early May. A few weeks later, he suffered a back strain that held him out for more than two months. He'd only make six more appearances in August before suffering an elbow strain that required Tommy John surgery, ending his season. Bender is expected to be sidelined for the full 2023 campaign as well.
Bender did not break camp with the Marlins despite a strong spring, but he was called up in early May and began his career with 21 straight appearances without allowing an earned run. July wasn't as kind to the rookie, but he still flashed his upside with a 23:2 K:BB over 14.2 innings during the month despite a 4.30 ERA. The right-hander earned his first-career save on July 5 and had fantasy managers speculating that he'd take over as Miami's closer once Yimi Garcia was traded. The job ultimately went to veteran Dylan Floro, but Bender certainly has the stuff to close with 97-mph heat on his sinker and a filthy slider that propelled him to the 78th percentile in whiff rate. He finished 2021 with three wins, three saves, 12 holds and outstanding ratios (2.79 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 10.4 K/9) over 61.1 innings. Bender should be in the mix for saves moving forward, but don't expect a full share of the closer role just yet.

Analysis
The Yanks have already picked up David Bednar in a trade but would like to further enhance their bullpen. Bender has managed a 1.83 ERA over 44.1 innings this season, although that's come with a less impressive 35:18 K:BB. He is under team control through 2027.
