2024 Fantasy Outlook
Rivas spent the majority of his 2023 season with Triple-A El Paso, though he was shipped to Pittsburgh at the trade deadline and got fairly regular run at first base for the final two months of the campaign. Across 106 plate appearances in that span, he hit .234/.305/.436 while striking out 27.3 percent of the time. Since the close of the season, he's been claimed by both the Guardians and Angels off waivers and could have the chance to earn a backup first base or DH role in Los Angeles behind Nolan Schanuel. Even with regular playing time, Rivas's skill profile isn't particularly inspiring, though it is worth noting that he raised his launch angle to 11.1 degrees and his flyball rate to 41 percent in 2023. If he can keep those improvements and find his way to some playing time, he could be a corner infield option in the deepest of leagues. Those hopes aren't worth the use of a draft pick. Past Fantasy Outlooks

2020
Rivas saw his first extended run in the majors in 2022, and he didn't fully capitalize on the opportunity. After appearing in 18 games in 2021, the infielder upped that to 101 games, and he slashed .235/.322/.307 across 251 at-bats. Rivas had a notable drop in batting average, falling from .318 to .235, and his OPS dropped from .797 to .629. The 26-year-old functioned as a platoon player, as he only saw 32 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers. The left-handed Rivas has historically struggled against southpaws, so the limited exposure made sense and is unlikely to change moving forward. The Cubs opted to move on from Rivas in December, and he joined the Padres on a minor-league deal a couple weeks later. He should serve as organizational depth for San Diego and is unlikely to crack the Opening Day roster.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
MLB chance on horizon?
Rivas could be added to San Diego's big-league roster this weekend if Manny Machado isn't cleared to return from his hand injury, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Machado isn't expected to be activated from the injured list when first eligible Friday, and Ha-Seong Kim also suffered a knee injury Thursday. The Padres are in need of infield depth, and Rivas could fit the bill given his .309/.425/.583 slash line with Triple-A El Paso this season.
