2024 Fantasy Outlook
Sampson pitched well as a starter for the Cubs in 2022 with a 3.11 ERA across 104.1 innings, but he never took the big-league mound last season. The right-hander missed the first three months of the campaign while recovering from knee surgery, and he struggled to a 10.17 ERA during his rehab assignment at Triple-A before being traded and released in August. Sampson landed a minor-league deal with Texas for 2024 and could see some starts as a swingman, especially during the first half with Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer and Tyler Mahle on the IL. Sampson isn't likely to have much fantasy value with no guarantees of a MLB role. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
Sampson managed a 3.11 ERA over 21 outings (19 starts) with the Cubs in 2022 but made just nine minor-league appearances in 2023 while missing time following knee surgery. He's healthy now and will compete for a swingman job with the Rangers, but the 32-year-old's most likely destination to start 2024 is Triple-A Round Rock.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Sampson turned in a solid if not spectacular season in 2022. The righty appeared in 21 games and made a career-high 19 starts, compiling a 3.11 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 104.1 total innings. That ERA was backed by a solid 3.79 FIP, marking the first time in his career that Sampson registered a FIP below 5.00. Of course, that track record is reason for some skepticism heading into 2023. Another red flag is Sampson's inability to miss bats, as he posted a 6.30 K/9 in 2022 and has a 6.73 mark for his career. Entering his age-31 season, Sampson should compete for a spot in a thin Chicago rotation, but he's certainly no guarantee to match his numbers from last year. Fantasy managers may want to stream him in certain spots if he continues to keep his ERA down, though that may be about the extent of his fantasy value. Sampson could also shift into a long-relief role, which would further diminish his appeal.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Favorite for final rotation spot
Sampson is the "smart bet" to open the season as the Cubs' No. 5 starter over Hayden Wesneski, Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic report.
ANALYSIS
Kyle Hendricks is expected to begin the season on the injured list as he works his way back from a shoulder injury, which will at least temporarily open a spot in the rotation. The 25-year-old Wesneski is certainly more interesting for fantasy purposes than the 31-year-old Sampson, but the latter has probably earned the opportunity after posting a 3.11 ERA over 21 appearances -- 19 starts -- last season. The odds are pretty good that the Cubs will wind up needing both pitchers to make a lot of starts for them in 2023.
