2025 Fantasy Outlook
There were a lot of reasons why the Orioles' 2025 season went sideways, but Rutschman's continued regression was one of the big ones. He had trouble staying on the field, being limited to only 90 games because of injuries to both obliques. When in the lineup, Rutschman put up a career-low .673 OPS and wRC+ of 91, and he's managed a lowly .209/.294/.332 batting line dating back to July 2024. If you're looking for some positive news, it's that Rutschman was very good in the plate discipline department again, boasting an 11 percent walk rate and just a 15.6 percent strikeout rate. The 28-year-old's quality of contact was also not dissimilar from his career norms, though he's never been a standout in that area. You don't have to squint too hard to see bounce-back potential, but Rutschman's trajectory is worrisome. Read Past Outlooks
Viewed as top catcher over Basallo
Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias said Monday that Rutschman remains "front and center" as the organization's top catcher, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
Analysis
Though Baltimore signed Samuel Basallo to a $67 million extension in August, the 21-year-old is regarded as a bat-first prospect who won't yet be entrusted to handle a full-time catching role in the big leagues. Basallo instead projects to see most of his reps at first base and designated hitter in 2026 while occasionally mixing in behind the plate, so long as Rutschman maintains health. When available this past season, Rutschman continued to provide value defensively, but his offensive production continued its downward trend from his 2022 rookie campaign. Over 365 plate appearances in 2025, Rutschman turned in a .673 OPS and supplied underwhelming counting statistics (nine home runs, zero steals, 37 runs and 29 RBI) in his 90 games. Set to turn 28 in February, Rutschman still has time to regain his prior form at the plate, but investing in him in 2026 fantasy drafts may require some blind faith on the part of fantasy managers.

Simba famously told us in The Lion King he laughed in the face of danger, and Rutschman certainly did the same in the face of those wondering if there would be a sophomore slump for the young catcher. The 25 year old backstop was a key cog of the AL East champion Orioles lineup finishing as the eighth-most valuable fantasy catcher and the only catcher who could claim at least 20 homers, 80+ RBIs as well as 80+ runs on their resume. If not for the misconfiguration of left field in Camden, Rutschman would have joined Cal Raleigh as the only catcher with 30 homers but that monstrosity is where most pulled flyballs go to die. Rutschman has already earned a reputation for a very discernable eye at the plate as he walks nearly as often as he strike out which is a rarity for both his age and his position. Baltimore values the bat and gave him 46 games at DH so he provides plenty of volume with the added bonus of hitting first or second in the lineup. Simply put, the acquisition cost is worth it.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Lineup demotion incoming?
Manager Brandon Hyde said Friday that he's "thought about" the possibility of moving Rutschman down in the batting order, reports Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun.
Analysis
Rutschman has primarily batted second and third through the first six-plus weeks of the season, but his .163/.273/.244 slash line over the past 26 games has the Orioles considering a lineup shakeup. The 27-year-old's .709 OPS in the 2024 regular season was about 100 points lower than the mark from his first two MLB campaigns, and he's regressed even further early this season.
