The Red Sox were already in the market for potential backup catchers when they shipped prosect Kyle Teel to the White Sox as part of the package to acquire Garrett Crochet. Narvaez was first of two backstops acquired via trade during the offseason, and he'll compete with the second acquisition, Blake Sobol, to back up Connor Wong. Sabol (121 games) has more MLB experience than Narvaez (six), but the latter was better in the minors at throwing out would-be base stealers. Wong has been durable since elevating to Boston's top catcher, playing 126 games in each of the last two seasons. The victor in the Narvaez/Sabol battle is not expected to get many starts.
