A pair of injuries delayed Gelof's debut until early July. He was hit by a pitch in spring training and required surgery on his hamate bone; then, in April, he was pulled from his rehab assignment due to a stress reaction in his ribs. After batting just .080/.143/.080 in his first eight games back, Gelof was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas until late August. After being recalled, he played regularly before dislocating his shoulder, missing the final eight days of the season. Gelof managed a .174/.230/.272 line during his second stint in the majors last year. He's expected to be fully healthy after shoulder surgery and will compete with Darrel Hernaiz and Max Schuemann for playing time at second base.
