Rivera batted .214/.294/.269 with the Marlins over 97 games when he was designated for assignment in August. The Orioles claimed him off waivers, after which he played about half of the time, recording an impressive .313/.370/.578 line. Perhaps rejuvenated by playing for a competitive team, Rivera's average exit velocity increased almost four mph, fueling a .364 BABIP. His history suggests that this is unsustainable, but it likely earned Rivera a chance to win a bench job in the spring. He can play both corner infield spots, but the Orioles are well-stocked at both spots, so Rivera will have to earn a reserve role.
